This collection contains records maintained in AJHS.
The Archives of the Australian Jewish Historical Society contain a unique collection of items on almost every aspect of Jewish life, from the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, to the early foundations of the Community in the early 1800’s and up to the present day.
Items of importance include genealogical material, personal papers, correspondence, corporate records of AJHS and other community organisations, such as Minutes of Meetings, annual reports, certificates, photographs as well as ephemera such as membership cards, brochures, booklets, pamphlets, invitations etc. The items have been collected over a period of over eighty years and were boxed and stored according to when they were acquired by AJHS or given to AJHS.
Due to the method of collection, the original order of simply keeping things in the order which the person or institution originally kept them and provenance are missing. Certain records may have been kept together for a reason, even if it is not immediately obvious as to what that reason was. Much of the material in this collection are dispersed in many boxes. Correspondence such as letters, postcards and telegrams that would have been sent to a(n) person/institution were not kept together but were dispersed and refiled according to subject.
Contextual information has not been preserved due to the manner of collection. There is no indication of the number of years material was collected for a specific person/organisation, as there is an absence of a consignment history. It is not possible to piece the records together but best effort has been established to index and provide a description of files in a box so that we might be able to cross reference and fill in some gaps in the collection.
The items in these series of Archive Boxes are regarded as the ‘heart of the archival collection’. They include personal and institutional papers such as records of the Jewish Cemetery Trust 1955-1980s, Moriah College 1950s-1980s, NSW Jewish Board of Deputies 1945-1970s, Sir Moses Montefiore Home 1894-1980s, State Zionist Council 1948-1990s, Sydney Jewish Sabbath School 1863-1956, and Sydney Jewish War Memorial (Maccabean Hall) 1923-1960s and Synagogue records.
