Australian Jewish Timeline

The Australian Jewish Historical Society maintains a dynamic timeline of Jews and the Jewish experience in Australia since the start of European Colonisation in 1788 until contemporary times, highlighting major events and figures in the participation of the Jewish people in Australia history, and the development of its community.

Users will be able to explore Jewish History in Australia on the timeline, extracting important dates by subject area, including: Politics, Military, Synagogues, Events, etc. Alternatively, users will also be able to explore via eras.

Military

Jewish Servicemen

Since participating in the Boer War at the time of Australian Federation and through subsequent military involvements more than 7,000 Jews have served in the Australian Defence Forces. Yet, over time information of their military service may have been lost or mis-remembered.

However, In addition to a significant collection of military memorabilia and medals the Australian Jewish Historical Society in conjunction with the NSW Association of Jewish Service & Ex-Service Men & Women (NAJEX) provides accurate information via its database of Jewish servicemen. This database details names, birthdates, identification numbers, service medals and links directly to their entry in the National Archive of Australia.

Users can simply type service person’s name into the search field below to explore the Society’s database exclusively of Jews who have served in the Australian armed services.

Users are also welcome to contribute to the accuracy and utility of the Society’s archives and databases by providing corrections and/or additional information.

AJHS Catalogue Cards

The Australia Jewish Historical Society holds a substantial collection of its archival content organised into approximately 2,200 files and 300 boxes. This content has been itemised in a detailed catalogue and provides the opportunity to explore the archive prior to requesting access.

The catalogue’s index cards can be searched by: file numbers, file title, the contributor’s name, and/or the source of the file. AJHS Illuminated Addresses

From the mid 19th until the early 20th century Illuminated Addresses were art works presented to specially mark an individuals esteemed contribution to an organisation.

Contained within the Australian Jewish Historical Society’s archive are a number of original Illuminated Addresses presented to Jewish people who made meaningful contributions to the community and beyond, including some works that are considered to be of national historical significance.

AJHS Newspapers

For nearly two centuries the breadth of Australian Jewish Life has been documented in a succession of news publications of their time. These newspapers have provided an priceless insight into, and reflection of the continuous and change in the Australian Jewish experience.

This search engine provides access to the Australian Jewish Historical Society’s extensive archive of newspaper material from the mid-19th century onwards.

Here, in addition to the publications found the National Library’s broad bibliographic database, Trove, is access to publications otherwise unavailable, such as: Australasian Hebrew 1895-1896, Australian Israelite 1871-1875, Australian Jewish Chronicle 1922-1930, and Australian Jewish Herald 1921-1968.

The Society’s collection offers news and editorial copy, and uniquely other content including birth notices and advertisements from publications dating back to 1841.

AJHS Photos

The Australian Jewish Historical Society maintains a considerable photographic collection that includes portraits of individuals, groups, buildings and cemetery monuments. Additionally, the Society possesses 10,000 photo negatives taken from the 1970s onwards sourced from the Jewish Times, and the George Denes collection of negatives depicting community events and religious occasions dating from the 1960s to 1990s.

These photographs are detailed in a comprehensive database and are accessible by making a request through this website.

Cemeteries

Historically, Jewish communities have not been limited to Australia’s major cities. Jewish people have travelled and settled throughout many disparate and far-flung parts of this vast country. The AJHS Journal and Newsletter

The Australian Jewish Historical Society has published its AJHS Journal since 1939, and currently publishes issues for both the New South Wales and Victoria branches. The Journals are available in hard copy and online covering a vast array of historical material on Australian Jewry from early British colonisation through to contemporary times. The original and scholarly content published in the Journal represents an important pillar of the Society’s function and has had content provided by a wide and knowledgeable cross-section of contributors.

The Society also produces a quarterly newsletter in each of its branches that contains shorter-form pieces.

Both the Journals and the Newsletters, past and recent, can be accessed through this page. Unlimited access is free to members of the AJHS or available for purchase by guests to the Society.
